Elite Football Performance Under Pressure
Professional football develops capability. Performance When It Matters™ focuses on what helps useful football behaviour remain functional, adapt and recover as competitive conditions change.

The Performance Problem
The question is not simply what a player can do. It is what remains available when the game changes.
Elite football already develops extraordinary technical, tactical and physical capability. The practical question is whether that capability remains functionally expressed when fatigue rises, the scoreline changes, mistakes disrupt performance and the next action carries greater consequence.
Performance When It Matters™ focuses on selected trainable aspects of regulation, attention, adaptation, recovery and reorganisation without reducing performance to a single cause or competing with existing club expertise.
PR5™ Performance Model
PR5™ organises five interacting and trainable performance functions that can be developed within football-specific environments to support effective performance as competitive demands change.
Gateway: Recognise what has changed. Then activate the function—or combination of functions—required by the next action.
Explore the PR5™ model →Adjust current state towards task requirements.
Restore attention to what matters now.
Adapt behaviour as competitive conditions change.
Restore useful performance following disruption.
Rebuild individual and collective organisation around the next demand.
Complexity in preparation. Simplicity in performance.
Built For The Game
PR5™ is translated into football-specific practice rather than taught as theory detached from competition. Players are progressively exposed to disruption, fatigue, changing match states and consequence, then coached to restore or reorganise useful performance around what the game requires next.
The objective is not to prevent destabilisation. It is to make players increasingly difficult to keep destabilised.
The seconds after a mistake become a specific coaching window: recognise the change, restore task-relevant attention and re-engage with the next action.
Train useful decisions and behaviour as physical and cognitive demands rise, with organisation—not simply fitness—as the performance requirement.
Practise functional adjustment as scoreline, time, tactical requirement and opposition behaviour change the information that matters.
Combine fatigue, scoreboard pressure and reduced time while coaching players to recover and reorganise without pretending training can fully recreate competition.
Progressive pressure exposure: technical stability → perceptual pressure → competitive pressure → emotional disruption → fatigue + decision pressure → scoreboard pressure → integrated competitive instability.
Evidence-Informed. Evaluation-Led.
Performance is multicausal and context-dependent. PR5™ is an applied organisational and training model derived from relevant evidence; its integrated effectiveness is an empirical question to be evaluated rather than assumed.
Professional Club Implementation
A structured 12-week intervention provides a bounded way to introduce the model, observe behaviour under comparable pressure, review player and coach experience, and refine implementation around the club's existing football model.

The Book
The Science and Practice of High Performance Under Pressure develops the wider argument behind Performance When It Matters™ and PR5™: why functional performance can change as competitive demands change, and what selected aspects of that response can be trained.
Explore the book →Professional Football
PR5™ is designed to sit inside a club's existing performance environment—not alongside it as another disconnected programme. The football model remains primary, while selected aspects of regulation, attention, adaptation, recovery and reorganisation are developed through football-specific practice.
Integration principle: complement coaching, psychology, sports science, S&C, medical and analysis provision rather than compete with it.
Structured Club Intervention
Football-specific. Delivered around the club's game model, language and competitive demands.
Bounded and measurable. Defined implementation, observation and review rather than open-ended consultancy.
Evidence-led. Player experience, coach observation and comparable pressure behaviour inform refinement.
